It’s hard to contextualize pop bands in the Youtube generation, with so many people uploading their own covers and remixes of the top hits of the time it’s hard to sift through and find the gems. The Weekend Riot not only know how to craft a catchy song but they work pretty hard on dissecting modern hits and reworking them into their own ideas. Right now you can catch a cover they did of Ariana Grande’s song Focus and Ed Sheeran’s song Sing that’s been mashed up into something new.
The Weekend Riot are a pop duo consisting of Johnny Costa and Bruce Wiegner who share vocal duties in many of their videos. Johnny is known to play the ukulele while Bruce usually chooses the guitar, this simplicity has led to some great moments. They’ve been featured on the front page of MTV.com for their mashup of One Direction and Justin Bieber that they filmed live at iPlay American in Freehold, New Jersey.
The boys had a release in early 2015, the Remember This Night EP, that was not only produced by but also co-written by Ace Enders. Enders rose to fame with his band The Early November and had a great career as a solo artist so his touch on this EP is subtle but no doubt brought out the best of Costa and Wiegner’s pop sensability. You can get the same treatment by Ace if you get at him through Noise Creator’s here.
The boys are always still growing their fanbase but have already garnered an extremely loyal following in Philly having sold out their first headlining show at The Trocadero Theatre. I’d definitely keep an eye on these guys, as soon as they hit that right mix in one of their videos of time and relevancy to popularity then they’re gonna blow up like Karmin did and end up with more radio play and touring than they know what to do with. I’m excited to see what 2016 has in store for The Weekend Riot and if you’d like to follow them along their musical journey check out their Youtube channel.
